Traffic was especially heavy today at what is now known as the Pope John Paul II Ave. (formerly Juan Luna Ave. which was formerly San Jose de la Montaña St.) in Mabolo, Cebu City with the celebration of the feast of the Lady of Mount Carmel by the Carmelite Monastery. Parking along Pope John Paul II Ave. has been allowed the past nine days in deference to the celebration of the Carmelites, an icon in Cebuano culture. The image of the Lady of Mount Carmel was taken out for a short procession this afternoon. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living in Mount Carmel in the Holy Land starting in the late 12th century. The monastery in Cebu was founded in 1949, making it 63 years old today.
